At a recent House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Hearing, Congresswoman Lauren Boebert addressed Denver Mayor Mike Johnston regarding his city's sanctuary city policies. Boebert criticized these policies for contributing to increased crime and diverting taxpayer funds from city services to support illegal aliens. She also highlighted the practice of relocating these individuals to areas like Aurora, Colorado, and Utah without notifying local authorities.

"It's shameful, but not surprising, that Denver Mayor Mike Johnston defended his city's Sanctuary City ordinance and refused to stand with local law enforcement officials from across Colorado who have demanded the repeal of Colorado's sanctuary state policies," stated Congresswoman Boebert. "Mayor Johnston has touted Denver as a model for illegal aliens, but he's simply shifted the problem to places like Aurora while hanging those communities out to dry as dangerous gang members terrorize their neighborhoods."

Boebert emphasized her commitment to addressing these issues at the federal level if changes are not made locally. She referenced a lawsuit filed by Douglas County Commissioners, joined by Elbert County and others in Colorado, aiming to repeal state laws that hinder collaboration between local law enforcement and federal immigration officials. Mayor Johnston confirmed his support for these laws.

Additionally, Boebert criticized the 2017 Denver "Sanctuary City" ordinance that restricts city employees from communicating with federal immigration officers without a warrant under threat of termination—a policy Mayor Johnston continues to endorse.
