Congresswoman Lauren Boebert of Colorado's 4th District has voiced her support for local governments in Southeast Colorado that have passed resolutions opposing the Southwestern Grid Connector Corridor. This corridor is part of the Biden Administration's National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor (NIETC) plan. The counties of Prowers, Baca, Crowley, Bent, and the Town of Holly have expressed their disapproval due to concerns about the lack of local involvement and potential use of eminent domain by the federal government.
Boebert attended a meeting with Prowers County Commissioners to discuss these issues and urged her constituents to submit public comments before the deadline. She stated, “Local counties and towns across Southeast Colorado have made it clear: this NIETC process has been broken from the start and has left them with serious concerns about the federal government taking over their land.” She further mentioned her direct communication with Energy Secretary Chris Wright regarding these concerns.
The NIETC is an initiative under the Biden Administration aimed at expanding energy infrastructure but has faced criticism for not considering private property rights adequately. The Southwestern Grid Connector Corridor spans Southeast Colorado, New Mexico, and Oklahoma Panhandle and is one of three corridors planned under NIETC.
Boebert encouraged residents to express their opposition through public comments before the midnight deadline on February 14th.
