Congresswoman Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Congressman Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin have introduced the Pet and Livestock Protection Act. This legislation aims to remove the gray wolf from the Endangered Species List, allowing states to manage their own gray wolf populations without federal intervention. The bill is supported by 30 other Members of Congress.

Boebert stated, “Gray wolves are threatening the livelihoods of our ranchers and farmers with attacks on livestock because our agriculture community has their hands tied by out-of-date policies and progressive legal activism. This bill enacts a common-sense solution shared by administrations of both parties and prioritizes the strength of our agriculture community over predators."

Tiffany added, “Scientific data, coupled with the rise in wolf attacks in Wisconsin, confirms that the gray wolf population has exceeded recovery goals. Yet, activist judges continue to disregard these facts, leaving livestock, pets, wildlife, and communities vulnerable to further harm.”

The act mandates that the Secretary of the Interior reissue a 2020 rule delisting gray wolves in most parts of the United States. It seeks to prevent judicial review from overturning this rule again. A California judge had previously overturned it in 2022.

The original 2020 decision by the Department of the Interior under President Trump cited scientific data supporting significant population recoveries for gray wolves in regions like the Rocky Mountains and western Great Lakes.

Supporters for this legislative move include various agricultural organizations such as American Farm Bureau Federation and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
