U.S. Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (CO-03) released a statement today following her vote in favor of the "No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act." The House of Representatives passed the legislation with a 219-186 vote, including support from 12 Democrats.
"Kamala Harris's reign as Border Czar has been one of the most detrimental decisions for our national security in American history. Colorado's sanctuary policies for illegals encourage the surge from the Southern Border to our communities, like Aurora," stated Congresswoman Boebert.
She added, "That’s why I’m proud to have voted in favor of Congressman LaLota’s ‘No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act’ today. His legislation will prohibit federal funds from being used to bail out sanctuary cities. We need to disincentivize illegal immigration, and this bill is a great step in the right direction."
According to information provided by the House Majority Whip’s office, this legislation aims to hold sanctuary cities accountable for exacerbating what they term as the Biden-Harris Border Crisis and ignoring federal immigration law. It prohibits taxpayer dollars from funding housing, healthcare, and other benefits for illegal immigrants in these municipalities.
The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act prohibits any restriction on communication between state or local entities and federal immigration authorities regarding an individual’s immigration status. However, several Democrat-led jurisdictions such as New York and California reportedly refuse to cooperate with federal immigration law enforcement.
Sanctuary policies are said to incentivize illegal immigration by offering free taxpayer-funded benefits. Critics argue that these policies burden schools, hospitals, and social services while endangering community safety by allowing criminal aliens to remain at large.
H.R. 5717 seeks to prevent American taxpayers from bearing the costs associated with radical immigration policies by prohibiting sanctuary cities from receiving federal funds intended for illegal immigrants' benefits.
