The City of Cañon City announced on May 1 that it will hold its third community open house for the Riverfront Initiative project on Thursday, May 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The event will take place at the former Parks Maintenance Building at Centennial Park, located at 221 Griffin Avenue.
The meeting aims to present final design concepts for the redevelopment of the riverfront site, which have been shaped by feedback from previous community events held on February 19 and December 2. The area under consideration includes a 22-acre site at the western gateway to Cañon City, formerly home to the Black Hills Energy W.N. Clark power plant, as well as the old Parks Department maintenance building and lot in Centennial Park.
During the open house, conceptual display boards will be available for residents to review and comment on the proposed designs. Planning staff from Cañon City and representatives from PORT Urbanism, who are consulting on the project, will be present to answer questions and gather additional input.
City officials say they want local residents’ opinions about what should be included in future plans for this key Arkansas Riverfront location. They encourage all interested community members to attend and share their thoughts about how this area should develop moving forward.
The Riverfront Initiative is part of ongoing efforts by Cañon City leaders to engage with citizens throughout major planning processes.
